Outdoor UPS Buying Guide: Backup Power for CCTV and WiFi

A power cut should not blind your cameras or drop your network. Yet for outdoor gear it usually does: the CCTV camera on the warehouse wall, the WiFi access point on the farm gate, the router in the parking-lot cabinet — all of them die the moment mains fails, exactly when you need them most. An outdoor UPS built for weather, dust, and wall mounting closes that gap. This guide covers what to look for before you buy, and how the wall-mount WOYUM® OWL answers each point.

Why an Indoor UPS Fails Outside

Most compact UPS units are designed for a desk or a server rack: a dry room, stable temperature, and a shelf to sit on. Put one outside and three things go wrong fast. First, rain and dust get in — a unit with no ingress rating corrodes at the terminals and fails within a season. Second, there is nowhere to mount it; it ends up balanced on a cabinet edge or zip-tied to a pole, which is how cables work loose. Third, a single output port forces you to choose between the camera and the router, when an outage is precisely when you need both.

The result is a familiar pattern for installers: the customer paid for 24/7 surveillance, but every storm leaves a gap in the footage and a support ticket on your desk. An outdoor-rated UPS removes all three failure modes at the design level.

5 Things to Check Before Buying an Outdoor UPS

Use this checklist to compare any unit you are considering:

1. Ingress rating — and read the fine print. Look for a real IP rating, not marketing words like “weather-resistant.” IP55 means the enclosure stands up to dust and water jets from any direction. Check what the rating covers: on the OWL, IP55 applies to the main unit body (the wiring port is excluded), so you still route cables with drip loops and sealed entries, as with any outdoor install.

2. Two independent outputs. Outdoor sites rarely have just one device. A camera plus an access point, or a router plus a modem, is the norm. Two independent DC ports let you back up both loads from one battery instead of stacking two units — half the mounting work, half the failure points.

3. Instantaneous switchover. If the UPS takes even a second to switch, your camera reboots and the recording gap you were trying to prevent happens anyway. Demand automatic, instantaneous switchover so connected equipment never sees the outage.

4. Mounting that survives the site. Integrated screw holes and a compact metal enclosure matter more outdoors than indoors. A 500 g-class unit that bolts flat to a wall or inside a cabinet stays put in wind and stays out of the way of maintenance.

5. Battery sized for the load. Add up what your devices draw and sanity-check the watt-hour rating. A 74 Wh pack comfortably carries typical 12 V cameras and routers — which draw single-digit to low-double-digit watts — through the short-to-medium outages that cause most footage gaps.

Meet the Checklist: The WOYUM® OWL

The WOYUM® OWL is a dual-port, wall-mount DC UPS designed specifically for this job:

Checklist itemOWL specification
Weather protectionIP55 (main unit body; wiring port excluded), aluminum alloy housing
Outputs2 × DC5521, DC 12 V at 1–2 A per port, 24 W max total
SwitchoverAutomatic, instantaneous — zero downtime for connected gear
MountingWall-mountable with integrated screw holes; 100 × 87 × 54 mm, approx. 500 g
Battery10,000 mAh / 74 Wh lithium; DC 12 V, 3 A input

Two details installers appreciate: the aluminum housing doubles as a heat spreader, so there is no fan to clog with dust, and the compact footprint fits inside standard outdoor network cabinets and CCTV junction boxes. If your equipment lives indoors instead, our WiFi router UPS buying guide covers the indoor options.

Where an Outdoor UPS Pays for Itself

Perimeter CCTV. Warehouses, parking lots, and construction sites lose their most valuable footage during storms and grid faults — the exact moments incidents happen. A wall-mounted UPS on the same circuit as the camera keeps recording through the outage.

Outdoor WiFi and rural broadband. Farm gates, campgrounds, marinas, and remote offices depend on an access point or LTE router mounted far from the building. When mains flickers, the whole site drops offline and every connected device reconnects at once. Backup at the pole prevents the cascade.

WISP and installer fleets. If you deploy customer-premises equipment outdoors, truck rolls to power-cycle gear after every outage are pure cost. Standardizing on one dual-port outdoor UPS across installs cuts support calls and gives every site the same behavior. For vehicle-based deployments, see our vehicle UPS range instead.
